THE DEATH'S DOOR LEGEND
The water passage between the peninsula and Plum and Washington Islands gets its foreboding name from Native
Americans and French Voyagers who respected its rough waters and loss of life there. The French charted it as Porte des Morts. Dozens of sailing schooners foundered and were lost there. Ore vessels of today, as well as Washington Island ferries, transit Door waters using modern navigational aids. Door County is named from this water passage.

This is a photo of the Dennis Sullivan crossing Death's Door in the summer of 2006.

THE STORY OF THE GRIFFIN
The French explorer Robert La Salle traded with the natives for furs. To transport the furs, he built the Griffin near the present day city of Niagara Falls. On September 2, 1679, the Griffin left Mackinac and arrived at Detroit Harbor on Washington Island a few days later. It was the very first sailing vessel to appear on the Great Lakes. After the pelts were loaded the Griffin lifted anchor on September 18, 1679, presumably on its way home. It was never heard from again.
